As I finalize my transition into an SDR role, I'm keen on structuring my first two years for rapid progression. For sales leaders and former SDRs in this channel, what were the 1-2 key skills or certifications you mastered that enabled you to move from SDR to Account Executive (AE) the fastest? Was it product knowledge, or truly mastering cold outreach?
Beside following the amazing clay community of course, check out Nate Nasralla from Fluint.
find the AEs internally with highest close rates and listen to gong calls on 2x to see what they say and how they do it. after reviewing a handful, ask for a 1:1 with them to get the strategy behind the words. you don’t have to copy 1 for 1 what they do, but it a way to ramp quickly with your own company’s products and reference for what works. imo, generic advice from influencers and such can only get you so far. really successful reps have deep industry knowledge and truly know the pains and prospects.
Honestly, it's not a skill, it's just results. You could have all the desire in the world, but if you're not putting in the results, whether you want to stay at your current company or go elsewhere, then it doesn't matter in my opinion. When I moved from being an SDR to SalesOps, for instance, even to make that move happen, your desires have a lot more inertia behind them, let's call it. If you're actually hitting quota, doing what you need to do, et cetera, whether that's the first 6 months, the year, et cetera. Like you have to build some equity.
