Having a problem with Google Maps search in Clay - when selecting a radius for a very specific location, im getting some results from completely different countries like Greece/South Africa even tho the radius is in the US Alaska. Would be great to understand what are the best practices to avoid this. Thanks!
I see the issue - your 1296 km radius is massive and likely crossing into international waters or overlapping with other continents. That's why you're getting results from Greece and South Africa. [1]
Here's how to fix it:
Reduce your radius significantly - 1296 km covers an enormous area. Try starting with a much smaller radius (maybe 50-100 km) and adjust from there. [2]
Use Business Type search instead of Free Text - Switch from "Free text" to "Business Type" and select a specific category. This gives much more reliable results than searching for "Villa Rentals" as free text.
Be more precise with location - Input a specific city or address in Alaska rather than just dropping a pin. The more specific your geographic targeting, the more relevant your results will be. [3]
Aim for under 1,000 results - Your current setup is trying to pull 999 results from a huge area. Focus on a location that would yield fewer than 1,000 results to optimize accuracy. [4]
What radius are you actually trying to cover in Alaska? That'll help determine the right size to use.
If you still need help refining your Google Maps search in Clay, I’m here to assist. Would you like to provide more details about the specific location or radius you’re aiming for in Alaska?
I would use serper instead
Good choice! Serper can give you more precise location control than Google Maps search.
You'll need HTTP API access and a Serper account. Create your account at serper.dev (first 2,500 queries free), get your API key, then set up an HTTP API column in Clay with your Serper credentials. [1]
Serper lets you craft more specific search queries and has better geographic targeting, which should solve your Alaska radius issue completely. [2]
Is that what you were looking for?
