Using OpenAI API with Clay's Web Researcher: A Guide

Hello, Is it possible to use OpenAI's API key + Clay's web researcher? Or does OpenAI API only work for offline mode? In Clay, I can only see option to use API key for without web researching option. Please clarify. Does that mean you have to spend credits to scrape web? No way around that? Many thanks, Joe

You can use your own OpenAI API key with Clay's web researcher (Claygent), but your OpenAI account must meet specific requirements. To use Claygent for web research, your OpenAI API key needs to be at least Tier 2 (≥450,000 tokens per minute). If your API key meets this, you can use Claygent without spending Clay credits for AI calls, as your own API key will be used instead. If you don't connect your own API key, you'll need to use Clay credits for web scraping and enrichment actions that require external data providers [1] [2] .

Very helpful thank you. So just to confirm, when account goes to Tier 2, the option appears on Claygent to switch to API key?

Yes, once your OpenAI account reaches Tier 2 (≥450,000 tokens per minute), you can use your own OpenAI API key with Claygent for web research. At that point, the option to add and select your API key will be available in the Clay interface. You can add your API key in Settings under Connections, or directly when setting up an enrichment that supports API keys. This allows you to use Claygent with your own key instead of spending Clay credits for those actions [1] [2].
