It seems the new Add row (to Google sheets) is breaking. I’ve authenticated my Google account and set the spreadsheet to editable by anyone in public. However, Clay’s throwing “Failed to retrieve spreadsheet” persistently.
This usually happens when there's an account mismatch. Check if you're using the correct Google account for the integration - the one that has edit access to your spreadsheet.
If you're using the wrong account, remove the connection and reconnect with the correct Google account that has proper access to the sheet.
Also make sure your Google Spreadsheet URL is correct and that the selected account has read or write access to the sheet you're trying to add rows to. [1]
You can click into the specific cell where you're seeing the error to get more details about what's causing the "Failed to retrieve spreadsheet" message.
Is that what you were looking for?
Yes but the sheet is editable by anyone in public? It doesn’t make sense?
Even if your sheet is publicly editable, Clay still needs to authenticate with the specific Google account that has access to it. The "Failed to retrieve spreadsheet" error typically means there's a mismatch between the Google account you've connected in Clay and the one that can access your sheet. [1]
Try this: Remove your current Google Sheets connection in Clay and reconnect using the Google account that owns or has edit access to the spreadsheet. Even with public permissions, Clay's integration requires proper account authentication to retrieve the sheet data. [2]
You can click into the specific cell showing the error to get more detailed information about what's causing the "Failed to retrieve spreadsheet" message.
Did that answer your question?
After i added editor access to the google sheet, and then refreshed fields in Clay, then removed editor access, now the warning goes away. I’m sure this is a bug on Clay’s end. could you escalate this as a technical ticket for the engineering team?
I understand your concern and will connect you to a human teammate who can assist further with this issue.
Our support team has got your message and we'll get back to you soon! We're currently outside of our standard office hours (9 AM to 9 PM EST, Monday through Friday), so it may take a little longer for us to respond.
If you’re dealing with a specific table, drop the URL below so we can help you quicker. Otherwise, someone from our team will be in touch soon!

Hey,
Thanks for flagging this. I agree this looks off, and we can escalate it to engineering, but we’ll need a bit more detail first so they can actually investigate it properly.
Could you share:
The Clay table URL where the Add row (Google Sheets) action is failing
The Google Sheet URL you’re writing to
The exact error message you’re seeing in the column or run info
Whether this happens on all rows or only new ones
If possible, a quick timestamp of a failed run so we can check logs on our side
One important note: even if the sheet is set to “editable by anyone,” Clay still relies on the authenticated Google account and its permissions. Refreshing fields temporarily fixing it does point to a potential permission sync issue, which is why the extra details will help us confirm whether this is a bug.
Once you send those, I’ll escalate this as a technical ticket with the engineering team.
Let me know if you have more questions.
We haven't heard back from you here, so we're going to go ahead and close this thread out.
