For me, I’d say my engineering depth is around 5–6/10. I’m not a full software engineer, but I’m comfortable building workflows, automations, and lightweight tools that support sales and GTM teams.
I think it’s reasonable to expect GTM engineers to have both sales/marketing understanding and some technical ability. However, expecting someone to build large custom applications fully from scratch without AI or engineering support is usually unrealistic. The real value of a GTM engineer is connecting business problems with practical technical solutions, not replacing a full-time software engineer.
