is there a way to wait for 1 column to completely run finish first before the next column runs?
Yes! You can control column sequencing using conditional runs. Here's how:
Method 1: Use "Only run if" conditions
Go to your second column's settings → Run Settings
Enable "Only run if" and set it to check that the first column has data
Use the "Use AI" button to write conditions in plain language [1]
Method 2: Check column status with formulas
For more precise control, create a formula column using:
Clay.getCellStatus(#{{field_id}})This checks if the referenced column is completed, empty, or has an error. Then use this formula column's result as a run condition for your next column.
Pro tip: If you need delays between columns, add a delay column (creates ~10 second pauses) between dependent columns and use its completion as a trigger.
This ensures your columns run in the exact sequence you want!
Is that what you were looking for?
if you set run conditions i.e tie the next column run with the output of the previous column then the next column will only run when the previous column has finished running.

i want the whole column to run finish first (instead of a specific cell within the column to run finish) - possible?
not possible
turn off auto updates and run manually.
Hi John, thank you for reaching out with such an interesting question. Unfortunately, the current Clay workflow design only allows auto-run actions to be controlled per row, not across the entire table. This is the first time we’ve received this type of request. We may be able to find a workaround—would you mind sharing more context around your use case? Thanks!
