How can I strengthen my application for a Clay cohort?

Hi everyone, Shrija here! I’ve been interested in joining a Clay cohort for a while and understand that selection is based on fit. I’m currently learning through Clay University, but I’m someone who gains more from guided learning and the opportunity to build alongside others. I applied to AlphaForge and, more recently, to Orchestration Foundations multiple times, but haven’t been selected. I’d love to understand what you look for in applicants and how I can strengthen my application for future cohorts. Are there any skills, projects, or prerequisites you’d recommend I focus on? I’m eager to learn and would appreciate any feedback or guidance. Thanks!

There isn’t a single “perfect” profile, but strong cohort applicants usually show a few key traits:
Curiosity + experimentation: You’re comfortable trying things, testing ideas, and improving systems over time. [1]
Technical fluency: You enjoy learning tools (Clay, automation, APIs, etc.) and aren’t afraid to tinker.
Systems thinking: You like breaking down complex processes and thinking about how automation can improve them.
Agency: You can figure things out and move forward without needing a lot of direction. [2]
Commercial mindset: You think about how your work actually helps drive results (like pipeline or deals).
A few things that can help strengthen your application:
Build small Clay workflows (even simple ones) and be able to explain how they work.
Show projects or experiments where you tried to solve a GTM problem.
Demonstrate learning by doing — not just theory, but actual builds.
Share examples of problem-solving or iteration, even if the result wasn’t perfect.
Also worth noting: you don’t need a technical degree or prior Clay experience to be a strong candidate. [3]
