OpenAI's API cannot be used to research or scrape live data from websites. The OpenAI API can only reference data that its model was trained on, and cannot access current information from the internet.
While you can use your own OpenAI API key in Clay (which is cheaper at around .003 cents per call versus 1 cent with Clay's key), this would only help with AI processing tasks, not with web research.
For web research and data collection, you would need to use other tools within Clay designed specifically for that purpose.
You can research and build lists from the web for free on Clay using several methods:
• Use the Clay Chrome Extension to scrape any website
• Build lists from multiple free sources including:
** LinkedIn
** Google Maps for local business leads
** GitHub for engineering contributors
** CRM tools
* General website scraping
The only actions that require credits are data enrichment tasks like finding contact information, retrieving firmographic data, or using AI for web scraping.
If you already have subscriptions to data enrichment tools, you can connect your own API keys to use them in Clay completely free of charge.
