Hi - I noticed that one of our contact's first and last name was updated to something that was unrelated to their email: justin.mancinelli@gmail.com. Clay changed their first name on 5/30/2025 from Justin to Arama. Can someone look into this and let me know why it was changed? Thanks!
Contact name changes in Clay typically occur when data enrichment providers update information based on their sources. Our system uses various data providers like Google, People Data Labs, Mixrank, and others to enrich contact information including first and last names. However, the sources don't provide specific information about why a particular contact's name was changed or how to investigate individual data updates. For this specific case involving justin.mancinelli@gmail.com, you'll need human assistance to investigate the data change history and determine which provider or process caused the name update. If you need further help with this investigation, please request human assistance by clicking on "Talk to a person." Which data enrichment columns or providers were you using in your table when this name change occurred?
Hey Jen, thanks for sharing this, and for sharing the table link. Given that table is auto-deleting records when they complete, we don't have much to go on in Clay right now. Where are you seeing that Clay made this update? In field history or the like? In a separate test account, I tried running that email address through the 'find profile' and 'enrich person' actions, and all the data came back as expected, nothing wrong in the First Name field. Do you have any other people or companies (etc.) in your HubSpot org with name "Arama"?
And on the second point, you have any other people or companies (etc.) in your HubSpot org with name "Arama"? Do you see any other records mysteriously updated in the same way, around the same time? My thought at this point is that it may have been introduced through accidental copy/paste or the like. Clay wouldn't be fabricating the values out of thin air. Quite odd.
We do not
I'll have to look if any other updates were made but yeah I initially thought it was due to a merging of records but that's not the case
I take it no similar odd updates on other records? I've checked what I can in our logs. Please confirm for me either way, and if this is still a mystery, I can connect with our engineers to see if there may be some remnant data that might give us a clue.
No, I haven't been able to find any other records with this issue. Yeah, if you don't mind connecting with the engineers to see if they can find anything. Not super urgent but curious as to why it happened. Thanks
Jen, managed to pin this one down. Looks like, at the time Justin was in the table, the Mixrank enrichment must have errored, and the 'enrich person' waterfall must have cascaed to People Data Labs. But PDL returned an incorrect profile for that address. As replicated in my test account:
From that point on, the row was running with incorrect information, and that led to the errant update you saw. We'll bring this to the data provider to help them correct. Appreciate your patience as we looked into it!
Thank you, Mark for looking into this and getting me an explanation. Appreciate it
For sure! Fun adventure diving into our logs... and a reminder for myself that it's always good to start with the simple explanations first. :) I'll tentatively mark this closed for the moment, but if you have other other mysteries in the future, we'll be here to help!
Sounds good. Thank you and have a great Friday
