Tips for Exporting API Data with Row Limitations

Hi, I'm trying to export some data from an API. I can only grab 15 items per row. However, for some of these, it's okay, but some it's exceeding the data limit, and then it won't let me send it to another table. What would be the easiest way around this?

This usually happens when the API response is returning a large array or long text, which hits Clay’s per-cell data limit. The easiest workaround I’ve used is to limit or chunk the response before sending it to another table for example:
Only map the specific fields you actually need (instead of the full response body)
Slice the array to the first N items, or loop over items and send them as separate rows
If it’s long text, extract or summarize the relevant part before passing it forward
Once the payload is smaller, sending it to another table should work without errors.

Not the greatest way to solve this but just a workaround - if you can't make the payload smaller, you can have a n8n workflow that takes the json file, divide it into smaller chunks, and then send it to Clay so you will have more rows and smaller payloads..
