Questions on Performance: Client vs Server Side and Workbook Speed

to what degree is the performance dependent on client vs server side computing. if this is a client side capacity issue then what is the recommended hardware config

are workbooks particularly slow or is this only a perception. my observation is that the more tables in hte workbook the slower it gets.
