Best Practices for Uploading New Companies Without Duplicates

Afternoon! I am wanting to do a new company upload but i don't want to pull in companies that I have already done and waist credits. I tried using the 'exclude companies' list and uploading the companies I already have in my CRM but it won't let you add it, only original clay uploads. What do you suggest that I do to avoid this? Thank you
