Survey: GTME Role Expertise and Skills in Sales, Marketing, and App Deployment

GTME questions: Those of you who have taken on the GTME role I’m curious how deep in the engineering expertise are you on a scale of 1 to 10? Is it reasonable for an organization to ask for you to have both sales/marketing skills and the ability to deploy custom applications for their sales team from scratch (meaning without Claude Code)? Why or why not?

For me, I’d say my engineering depth is around 5–6/10. I’m not a full software engineer, but I’m comfortable building workflows, automations, and lightweight tools that support sales and GTM teams. I think it’s reasonable to expect GTM engineers to have both sales/marketing understanding and some technical ability. However, expecting someone to build large custom applications fully from scratch without AI or engineering support is usually unrealistic. The real value of a GTM engineer is connecting business problems with practical technical solutions, not replacing a full-time software engineer.
